On this day 8th March, 2012 ’Controversial’ player, Bernard Dong-Bortey was handed a 12-month ban by the Disciplinary Committee of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for assaulting a match official.
The Aduana Stars midfielder, who is surrounded by a lot of controversies was handed a 12-month ban following a hearing into the case after the FA Cup match against King Solomon on January 21, 2012 at the Agyemang Badu Park in Dormaa.
According to the Disciplinary Committee, the 29-year old was found guilty of the charge, which caused confusion in the match that saw Aduana Stars win by a goal to nil.
“Dong-Bortey has been issued a suspension for a period of 12 months. The player assaulted the central referee during an MTN FA Cup Round of 64 match with King Solomon on January 21, 2012” a GFA statement read.
Dong-Bortey, started his football career with Ghapoha and joined Hearts of Oak in 2001, winning the CAF Confederations Cup, plus several league titles with the Phobians, before he moved to Aduana Stars in the 2010/11 season. He had a stint with New Edubiase and is currently playing for Panthers fc in Equatorial Guinea.
The former Hearts midfielder, featured for the Black Starlet in New Zealand 1999 during the FIFA U-17 World Cup and was also part of the Black Stars team between 2002-2004.
The serial killer as he is affectionately called was a tormentor in chief for Hearts of Oak especially when playing against Asante Kotoko.
