Inflation hits 15.9%

Inflation for the month of August hit a record high of 15.9 %. This is the highest recorded since January 2010.

Last month’s inflation increased from 15.3 % recorded in July to the current 15.9 %.

The food inflation rate increased from 5% recorded in July to 5.1%. The group was dominated by the mineral water and soft drinks subgroup which recorded an inflation rate of 22.1%.

The non-food group inflation increased from 23.1% to 24%. This was driven by housing, water, electricity and other fuels with an inflation rate of 61.7%.

Inflation for imported items hit a rate of 21.6% while the locally produced items recorded a rate 13.8%.

Meanwhile, the Central Region recorded the highest inflation with a rate of 20.4 % while the Upper West region recorded the lowest rate of 12.3%.

The Greater Accra region however recorded an inflation rate of 15.9% up from the rate of 15.3%
