The Acting Director of the Ghana Education Service, Charles Aheto Tsegah has revealed that it is not automatic that all students who graduate from the Senior High School (SHS) would make it to the university.

According to him students participate in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for diverse reasons and they must be given the opportunity to exercise their right.

“It’s not a matter of cause that people must necessarily progress into tertiary institutions, ” the acting director said.

A report by the West African Examination Council, (WAEC ) stated that 70% of candidates who wrote the WASSCE for 2013/2014 academic year failed to make the required grades for entry into tertiary institution.

WAEC’s revelation has ignited public outrage  with many demanding answers from the state agencies responsible for education.

Speaking on Citi FM’s eyewitness news, Mr. Tsegah blamed the low pass rate on what he described as the challenges in the education sector.

He however called for drastic measures to be put in place to focus on improving the teaching and learning of core subjects – English, Maths and Science.
