The membership of the Suame Magazine Spare Parts dealers Association, an off shoot of Ghana Traders Union Association (GUTA) has given their foreigner retailers an ultimatum to leave the local market or face their wrath.
Briefing the media in Kumasi, Mr. Kwame Brenyah, Chairman of the irate spare parts dealers, stated that there was a lack of political will and commitment on the part of Ghanaian authorities to enforce the laws of the land.
The GUTA members urged the concerned foreign traders to voluntarily vacate the trade in their interest to avoid future rancor and confrontations. They stated that the claim by some foreign traders that they are duly registered was fraudulent and untrue.
According to the Association Chairman, the influx of foreigners into the Ghanaian retail trading sector contravenes the established laws of GIPC ACT 865 section 27 of Ghana.
The irate GUTA members noted that their agitations against this open disregard of the laws of Ghana started more than six years ago following which a number of task forces have been set up by inter-government institution but, which have not yielded any positive result.
According to the spare parts dealers, the Task forces were suspended within a matter of two to three weeks for no apparent reason.
“The obvious conclusion anybody can draw from this situation is lack of political commitment from Ghanaian authorities” it stressed. Mr. Brenya maintained that their actions should not be misconstrued as egoism but rather Ghanaians should see it as an action being taken in the Supreme National interest.
The Spare Parts dealers condemned the Rambo-like fashion of Police invading the Suame Magazine on Wednesday, July 16, 2014, an action they believed was to please the foreigners whose are operating illegality against the interest of Ghanaians who are only defending and protecting their means of livelihoods.
“This indiscretion and unnecessary display and show of force were potentially more dangerous under the circumstances than the problem the police sought to solve”, the dealers noted.
