Two children reportedly drowned when a canoe in which they were travelling capsized at Manpongso in the Wassa East District on Sunday June 22, 2014.

18-year-old boy Kwame Nkrumah and a JHS graduate,  Maame Adwoa, and a primary school girl were crossing the Pra River to Daboase when the incident occurred.

The National Disaster Management Organization(NADMO) coordinator for Wassa East, Felix Ntibre confirmed the incident to Citi News,  saying that they have commissioned a search party to look for the bodies.

“Their bodies have not been found, and my men are on the ground. I reported the case to the police who are also now helping with the search.”Mr. Ntibre indicated.

The incident is causing fear in communities which use the Pra River as their means of transport.

The Pra River is overflowing its banks and flooding communities in its path.

About two weeks ago many residents at Supomu Dunkwa, Shama Krobo and Anlo Beach in the Shama districts were displaced and their farmlands destroyed.

Felix Ntibre says he has sent a word of caution to communities along the Pra River to be on guard as there are no signs that the river will recede soon. He cautions communities living along the Pra to be wary.
