Four prisoners of the Sunyani Central Prison in the Brong Ahafo who sat for the November-December 2015 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) have passed in all the five subjects they registered in.
The four, however, come to the end of the road with their education as the country’s prisons do not have facilities for distance education.

The results
According to the Prisons Public Relations Officer of the Brong Ahafo Region, Assistant Superintendent of Prisons (ASP) Vincent Ziniel, Nyatse had grade A1 in Social Studies, A1 in Business Management, A1 in Financial Accounting, A1 in Cost Accounting and A1 in Economics.
He said Sonnawe had B2 in Social Studies, A1 in Business Management, B3 in Financial Accounting, A1 in Cost Accounting and A1 in Economics, while Anning had C4 in Social Studies, B3 in Business Management, A1 in Financial Accounting, A1 in Cost Accounting and B3 in Economics with Baffour grabbing C4 in Social Studies, B3 in Business Management, D7 in Financial Accounting, B2 in Cost Accounting and B2 in Economics.
Distance education
Mr Ziniel said other inmates were also being prepared by their tutors, Sergeant Francis Napol and Sergeant Farouk Umar, for the next WASSCE.
He stated that there were a lot of other prisoners who had written and passed the WASSCE in the past and did exceedingly well but could not continue their education.
He, therefore, appealed for distance education facilities to be introduced into the country’s prisons to help prisoners acquire higher education.
Meanwhile, he said the service was also in talks with some tertiary institutions to consider extending distance education programmes to qualified prisoners.
In the absence of formal teaching in the prison, the PRO said the examination was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Sunyani East.
“The Sunyani Central Prison is grateful to the Rotary Club for responding to our call and I also want to use this opportunity to call on other non-governmental organisations and well-meaning individuals to also support the inmates’ education as the government alone cannot do it,” he said.
