The Registrar of Births and Deaths, John Agbeko, has refuted claims that the introduction of the automated birth registration system will result in massive job cuts at the births and deaths registry.
The Birth and Death Registry last year introduced a technology that will allow people to register new births via mobile phones.
The technology, which is in partnership with UNICEF Ghana and Tigo Ghana, will allow the collation of data from rural Ghana directly onto a national database. However, some concerns have been raised about possible job cuts at the registry.
In an interview with Citi News, John Agbeko said their employees are all registration officers and will therefore fit anywhere they will be posted.
“The registry currently needs to expand its capacity, because we have about 412 registries and the staff on ground is less than 300 so you realize that for now there won’t be any heats as far as workers are concern. We wouldn’t have to throw anybody away; we can just shift or realign people to do other assignment elsewhere.”
The birth and death registry today launched the automated birth and death registration system with the signing of a MOU between them and their partners, UNICEF Ghana and Tigo Ghana with collaboration from the Ministry of Local Governance and Rural Development.
