President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing, to begin the construction of a sea defense wall in the Keta Municipality.
This comes days after tidal waves displaced hundreds in the Municipality.
[contextly_sidebar id=”fZ4jHpoK7WWwbO70nK0AOKDNR6BuPoF2″]Speaking to journalists after touring the affected towns, Minister for Water Resources, Works and Housing, Dr. Kwaku Agyeman Mensah, indicated that his ministry is going to act without delay on the President’s order.
“The President is concerned about what happened few days ago here and he has instructed that we should take this project on emergency basis. So we’ve started engaging the contractor and we are also talking to the Ministry of Finance for funding,” he added.
Residents flee after tidal waves
Scores of residents were affected by tidal waves in Fuveme in the Keta Municipality of the Volta Region compelling them to flee from their homes.
The waves, which started displacing residents in the late hours of last Sunday, were said to have carried away livestock and other belongings of residents.
Nearly two-thirds of Keta overtaken by the sea
The District Chief Executive of the Keta Municipal Assemby, Sylvester Tonyava, had lamented that nearly two-thirds of municipality has been taken over by the sea.
“More than two third of Keta has gone into the sea and what is left now is just skeletal because Keta once upon a time served as the capital of the southern province here and it was a busy commercial center but today it’s nothing to write home about.’’
The DCE added that human activities along the coast can be blamed for the situation and further pleaded with government to protect Keta instead of asking the residents to relocate.
