The National Democratic Congress Member of Parliament for Nanton, Murtala Mohammed, has defended the Ghana Immigration Service for deporting three retired South African Police officers, contracted to train the security detail of the New Patriotic Party’s Flagbearer and his running mate.
GIS revoked their business visas and repatriated the three men last week explaining that they concealed their motives.
[contextly_sidebar id=”kQsWsAvc4nQGid0GTsSH9wETACkJ0Hkr”]The three, Major Ahmed Shaik Hazis (rtd), 54; Warrant Officer Denver Dwayhe, 33, and Captain Mlungiseli Jokani, 45 were arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit crime and unlawful training.
Although the court granted them bail, the BNI held them in their custody for a few days before Government announced they had been repatriated.
Members of the NPP have lashed out at the government and the security agencies for the treatment meted out to the South African nationals.
The NPP had claimed that the three ex-Police officers were genuinely in the country to offer training services to the party’s security personnel.
Speaking on Citi FM’s News analysis programme, The Big Issue on Saturday, the Nanton MP, said the GIS did the right thing.
“The only institution that is mandated by law to determine who gets into this country and who leaves is the Ghana Immigration Service. Once they have refused you permission to be in this country, and they think that we need to deport you, I don’t see anything wrong with that.”
SA guys didn’t know who invited them
Although the NPP had said the three were brought into the country by a private security company, Mr. Murtala observed that they in their written statement confessed that they were invited by the NPP.
His claim however contradicts the investigations conducted by the GIS which concluded two of the men were invited by Mcdan Shipping, whereas the other was invited by an executive of the Danquah Institute.
“Based on their own written statement in the presence of their lawyers, they said they were invited by the NPP. They themselves were confused as to the reasons why they were in this country. They themselves were confused as to who actually invited them. It is an issue of concern,” he added.
