Over 900 people displaced by Yendi rainstorm

A rainstorm has displaced 942 people in the Yendi Municipality of the Northern Region.

Records from the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) showed that 368 rooms in 91 households were affected.

As the first rainstorm recorded in the Northern Region in 2016, five teachers were among the victims.

The situation has compelled the affected teachers to temporarily abandon the classroom.

According to them, they collected bank loans and build their houses which were completely ripped off.

They appealed for assistance for re-roofing and to enable them service the loans.

The Municipal Chief Executive, Alhaji Issah Zakaria who toured the affected communities with the media called for external intervention.

According to him, the district NADMO submitted its report to the headquarters for relief items.

He said his administration was mobilizing relief items internally to assuage their frustrations.

Alhaji Issah Zakariah reiterated the need for residents of the Municipality to plant trees in their neighborhood to serve as windbreaks.

59th Independence Anniversary  

Despite the disaster, students from some selected schools in the Yendi Municipality participated in Ghana’s 59th Independence Anniversary.

The Municipal Chief Executive reiterated the need for the youth to regard education as their key to success in life.

He said government was committed to improving the nation’s educational sector to make it accessible and affordable to all.

Alhaji Zakariah said government’s distribution of free exercise books and uniforms was in progress in the Municipality.

Ahmadiyya Junior High School was adjudged the best after the match past whiles the Yendi Senior High School topped the secondary category.

A-non Governmental Organization, the Development and Unity Foundation (DUF) awarded the Ahmadiyya JHS with a set of jersey and four cartons of orange drinks.

The Yendi Senior High School also received a set of jersey and assorted drinks.
