A new political party has officially joined the fray ahead of the November 2016 general elections.
The African Reform Movement (ARM) has been given a provisional license by the Electoral Commission to operate in Ghana.
This brings to 25, the number of political parties licensed by the Electoral Commission.
The party was founded and is led by medical doctor Nii Amu Darko who regularly advocates for a complete change of Ghana’s constitution.
According to him, it is primary reason for Ghana’s failings is not any individual or political party but the countries “flawed” constitution.
Speaking to Citi News Dr. Nii Amu Darko said, “The fundamental problem of Ghana is not John Mahama, it’s not Nana Akufu Addo… it is the constitution. It is a very flawed document.”
The leader of the AMR party has further committed to highlight the reasons he believes the constitution of the land is the reasons for the countries woes.
He said, “We are going to point out to Ghanaians why the misrule is so pervasive, why it is actually endemic. It is because the constitution allows all these things to happen.”
As an example of the perceived flaws in the constitution, Dr. Nii Amu Darko noted it gives the president too much power.
He further stated his political party, if given the mandate to govern, will come out with a more rigid constitution to limit the president.
“Our constitution is a discretional constitution which gives so much power to the president… We are going to come with a prescriptive constitution which actually limits.”
The AMR are also advocates of “Afremocracy”, a federal system of governance with an elected national government and elected state governments.
They view federalism as the most suitable system of governance for effective decentralization in a multi-ethnic nation.
