Deputy Transport Minister, Joyce Bawa Mogtari, says government is working around the clock to pay striking railway workers, assuring they will be paid before Christmas.
The Railway Workers Union last week announced the withdrawal of passenger services from Accra to Tema and Accra to Nsawam, following government’s failure to pay their three-months salary arrears.
The General Secretary of the Railway Workers Union, Godwill Ntarmah, also demanded the immediate dissolution of board of directors of the company, and an assurance their salaries will be paid before end of December 2015.
The union also demanded salary adjustments for the workers.

It is however unclear if all other demands by the union would be met.
Mrs. Joyce Bawa Mogtari revealed to Citi News the Ministry of Transport had been working to address the grievances of the striking workers.
“The Ministry of Transport has been working to resolve the impasse with the railway workers union. As we speak, we have actually made very good strides with regards to settling the three month salary arrears,” she said.
She expressed hope the salary arrears would be settled before Christmas although she did not give a specific date.
“I am actually hoping that before the yuletide, the railway workers will be paid their salaries. I want to use your platform to give the assurance the ministry is doing all within its power to ensure that railway workers get paid.”
