The flagbearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akufo-Addo, has justified the party’s decision to suspend three of its national executives.

National Chairman Paul Afoko, General Secretary Kwabena Agyepong, and Second Vice Chairman Sammy Crabbe, were suspended for misconduct.

But Mr. Paul Afoko has insisted his suspension was illegal and is fighting it in court. Sammy Crabbe has also refused to accept the suspension saying he still holds his position.

However Mr. Kwabena Agyepong is yet to comment on his suspension.

Meanwhile, speaking at the NPP’s 15th Extraordinary National Delegates Conference in Sunyani, Nana Akufo-Addo bemoaned the suspensions but said he supports the decision because it is in the supreme interest of the party.

“We are ending the year with three senior elected officials and a handful of other officers having been suspended from office. I can’t find an easier way to tell you that this has been a traumatic experience for me personally. And I am very much aware of the heartache many of our supporters have been enduring. I honestly wish we had been able to find a less painful way of resolving the problems that have wracked our party.”

He added that in the last 12 months, “I have participated in every attempt to resolve the differences at the Party headquarters. It has been most frustrating that the efforts have not yielded the fruits we expected. I am saddened that the party has had to resort to suspensions, but I am fortified that our party structures have been shown to work. They have demonstrated that, indeed, the rule of law works in the NPP and that nobody, including myself, is above the Party or its laws. And that is how it should be.”
