The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission, (PURC), has filed a suit in court seeking to set aside an earlier case brought against it by the Consumer Protection Agency (CPA) over the recent tariff increases.

CPA’s CEO, Kofi Kapito, filed the suit against the Commission and the utility providers seeking to restrain them from implementing the recent upward tariff adjustment, as far as power is concerned.

[contextly_sidebar id=”daIM1C8PRt4VgzvkqZQ20owvvTAXJ3EH”]The PURC recently announced a 59.2 per cent hike in electricity tariffs. But Kofi Kapito declares in his suit the power stakeholders have failed to live up to expectations and so prayed the court to place an injunction on the implementation which was to take place on Monday.

Kofi Kapito, last week, filed a writ at the High Court questioning the fairness and legality of a 59 per cent hike in electricity prices.

This price hike was scheduled to take effect on Monday December 14, 2015.

He stated among other things, the hikes were insensitive and did not take into consideration the plight of consumers enduring the hardship brought on by the power crisis and the load shedding regime.

Four other companies including the Volta River Authority, the Electricity Corporation of Ghana and the Ghana Grid Company Limited were also included in the suit.
