The management of the Korle Bu Blood Bank has been called upon to review the processes donors seeking support from the blood bank go through in order to encourage more people to voluntarily donate blood to save lives
The Administrative Manager of the Coconut Grove Hotel in Accra, Ms Roberta Torkornoo, who made the appeal, said “the bureaucratic processes that donors go through while seeking assistance from the blood bank are too cumbersome and have to be reduced if we are to succeed in getting more people to donate blood to replenish the blood banks”
Ms Torkornoo made this appeal during a blood donation exercise by the staff of Coconut Grove Hotels.
She said the exercise, which was started five years ago through the inspirational leadership of Mrs Yvonne Nduom, Board Chairperson, saw a hotel staff in Accra as well as Elmina branch donate 60 pints of blood to support the Korle Bu Blood Bank.
Ms Torkornoo said the annual exercise which forms part of the establishment’s corporate social responsibility would now be conducted twice every year.
She said before the commencement of the exercise, a sensitization programme was conducted and staff were encouraged to donate because of the advantages they stood to gain if they donate to save lives.
According to Ms Torkornoo, staff were screened to help them know their health status and were also made to understand that ”at each pint of blood they donated led to the burning of 650 calories in the donors body and also reduced the lipid levels”.
She said this year staff from other subsidiaries of the Group Nduom conglomerate also participated in the exercise.
