Private business man, Ibrahim Mahama, has sued the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako over what he says are defamatory comments made against him.
Mr. Mahama, who is brother to President John Mahama in his statement of claim to the Fast Track High Court in Accra said, Mr. Antwi-Bosiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, made the defamatory comments on March 30, 2014 at a People’s Forum at Obuasi in the Ashanti Region.
Ibrahim Mahama, the plaintiff in the case, is seeking a declaration from the court that the statements made by Chairman Wontumi are false, malicious and defamatory.
He is demanding GHC 2 million cedis as damages for the defamatory statements made against him.
Mr. Mahama is also praying the court to “compel the defendant to publish a full and unqualified apology to the Plaintiff and retraction of the statements made in all the newspapers and tabloids in which the defamatory statements were repeated by their publication of the same.”
Chairman Wontumi on 30th March 2014, alleged that President Mahama and his brother Ibrahim, have loaded state money into their pockets.
It is based on this allegation that Mr. Ibrahim Mahama has filed a suit against the NPP Ashanti Region Chairman.
Meanwhile an aide to Chairman Wontumi, Edward Kwesi Akuaku said he is not aware his boss has been served with a writ.
”I am not in the position to confirm whether or not my chairman has been served; I spoke to him just this morning [Friday] and he never gave me any indication that he has received any such writ. I want to believe that maybe he is yet to be served,” he said.
Kwesi Akuaku however, said lawyers of his boss will respond appropriately when they receive the suit.
