The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) is calling on Ghanaians outraged by the recent increases in utility tariffs to rise up and protest against it.

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) announced an increase in electricity and water tariffs by 59.2% and 67.2% respectively ahead of the Christmas season. The proposed increment takes effect from December 14, 2015.

[contextly_sidebar id=”fbylii3cOYtqSdKmvmbh74Xd1ferJrY2″]The General Secretary of the party, Kofi Asamoah Siaw, expressed outrage with the decision saying “it is completely annoying and Ghanaians must rise against it. It shouldn’t be a political party leading it. Ordinary citizens of this country must let the Government and the PURC know these things are no longer acceptable in this republic.”

He added, “It is up to the people of Ghana to take action and that action should be political in 2016.”

The PURC has defended the increase saying the increments are due to the new power generation facilities that have come on board including including the Karpowership at Tema.

The move to increase tariffs has provoked public outcry with the opposition New Patriotic Party describing the increase as sheer wickedness and evil, asking the government to halt it.

Other organizations including the Tema District Council of labor, the Ghana Chamber of Commerce and Industry have also kicked against the increments.
