A Local Government Analyst, George Kyei Baffour, is calling for the resignation of Municipal Metropolitan and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), who failed in their bid to be elected parliamentary candidates in the just ended primaries of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
This comes on the back of the resignation of the MCE for Suhum, Samuel Fleisher-Kwabi for the same reasons.
[contextly_sidebar id=”zvqsJ1kvEXn64K8RlrdrsXS2GqD9ld1E”]In a letter addressed to the office of the President, Mr. Fleisher- Kwabi explained that his resignation was because he failed the bid to be nominated as a parliamentary candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the area.
“As a Chief Executive for the past seven years, I had to implement many hard but cogent decisions of the assembly, some of which brought fierce resistance and confrontation from some party functionaries and executives… there are many more of such decisions which if not implemented could render the assembly impotent and ineffective; but now that I have lost the parliamentary primaries, any attempt to implement them is likely to be misinterpreted or misconstrued,” he explained.
Speaking to Citi News, Mr. Baffour said it will be in the interest of the party for the defeated MMDCEs to emulate Mr. Kwabi and also step down.
“The Chief Executives are expected to lead people within the constituency as the executive head of the district. Of course without the direct mandate of the people, the NDC within the district is a small enclave and if you could not win the mandate of a small enclave then it shows that by extension, you will not be able to legitimize leadership across the entire length and breadth of the district because the other side of it is that, perhaps about 40 % of the remnants of the district are NDC people and already they will not be with him and if his own people have rejected him, it is a sign of despondency on their part, it is a sign of loss of confidence, ” he explained.
