Comedian and showbiz icon, Seth Kwame Dzokoto, has been overwhelmingly elected as the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate for the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Constituency, ahead of the 2016 general elections.

The Actor cum Host of ‘Edziban’, a popular television show that mainly promotes Ghanaian cuisine, went into the competition against one Thomas Okyere, who managed to poll 398 votes, against Dzokoto’s 1,450 votes.

Only 12 votes were rejected in Saturday’s primary.

Mr. Dzokoto’s sudden leap from comedy into politics stunned many with some questioning his capacity and competence.

Some of his critics and opponents had questioned his capacity to contribute meaningfully in Parliament, should he eventually win his party’s primaries and go ahead to win the elections in 2016.

But Mr. Kwame Dzokoto, who is also the General Manager of Accra-based Pluzz FM, in an earlier interview with Citi News, rubbished those criticisms.

He said his decision to go into politics is largely borne out of a genuine desire to give back to the people of Tarkwa-Nsuaem.

“I have heard somebody say that Kwame is going to Parliament; does he think we are going to do concert there? So I asked myself this; we equally have doctors in Parliament; does it mean they are injecting people or giving clinical services there? That is not the case; they are representing the people to ensure that the right things are done in terms of passing laws; so that’s the job I am going to do there” he emphasized.

Kwame Dzokoto’s popularity in the NDC was unknown although he is widely known in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipality where he started his radio career.

Having won the primary, Dzokoto will face stiff opposition from the NPP’s candidate, George Mireku-Duker, a one-time MCE for Tarkwa-Nsuaem .

The Tarkwa-Nsuem seat has been occupied by the incumbent MP for the constituency, Gifty Eugenia Kusi since 2000, but she lost the NPP’s recent primary to George Mireku-Duker.
