Mo Ibrahim annual governance weekend launched in Accra

The Mo Ibrahim Foundation launched its Annual Governance Weekend in Accra on Tuesday, at a  ceremony at the Accra  International Conference Centre( AICC)

The launch saw representatives of the Mo Ibrahim Foundation and ambassadors  converge on the (AICC).

The annual governance weekend is the Flagship event of the Mo Ibrahim foundation which is held every year in a different African country.

The three day event convenes prominent African political business leaders and representatives from civil society to discuss issues that are vital to Africa.

The weekend opens on Friday evening with an annual leadership ceremony which celebrates Ibrahim Laureates and excellence in African Leadership.

The Minister for foreign Affairs and Regional, Hannah Tetteh who launched the Mo Ibrahim Annual Governance Weekend at a ceremony in Accra on Tuesday said, Ghana was privileged to host the three day programme which begins on the Friday 20th of November and ends on Sunday 222nd November, 2015.

She said the programme would start with on Friday with an award ceremony where the former President of Namibia, Hifekepunye Pohamba, and the 2014 awardee will be honoured.

“On Saturday, there will be an African debate at the Movenpick Hotel in Accra on the theme “African Cities “ which will be followed by a concert at the Independence Square later in the evening.

The Mo Ibrahim Annual Governance Weekend will be climaxed with a football match between TP Mazembe and Ghana all stars On Sunday.”

Hon Hannah Tetteh added that the Mo Ibrahim Annual Governance Weekend ought to have been held in Accra in 2014 but had to be rescheduled to 2015 because of the Ebola scare.

President  Hifekepunye Pohamba, the 2014 awardee follows  President  Joaquim Chissano  of  Mozambique(2007), Festus  Mogae  of  Botswana (2008) and President Pedro Pires of Cape Verde( 2011).Former President of South Africa , Nelson Mandela was made the inaugural Honorary  Laureate in 2007.

In 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2013, the were no winners because the Prize committee did not find anyone deserving of what has arguably become the world’s richest award.

The Mo Ibrahim Prize grants the laureate $5million over the first ten years and then $200,000 annually for life.

The Ibrahim Prize is given to a former head of state . The Ibrahim Prize recognizes and celebrates excellence in African leadership.
