Seven injured, 3 houses torched in Bolga clashes [Photos]

Three houses have been set ablaze with seven persons injured in a renewed chieftaincy conflict in Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region.

Confirming the incident to Citi News, the Upper East Regional Police Commander, DCOP Simon Yao Afeku, said the violent exchanges occurred on Saturday when two rival chiefs clashed.

“Yesterday (Saturday) around 8: 20 pm, we had a report that there was a clash between two sides of the chieftaincy dispute in Bolga so we quickly dispatched some men both from the Military and the Police to calm down tensions and restore law and order .”

He said seven persons who sustained gunshot wounds in the process have been hospitalized.

“During the attack, we had a number of sporadic gunshots coming from both sides so seven persons were injured… they had gunshot wounds of various degrees and are currently at the hospital receiving the necessary treatment.”

“Some three houses were set ablaze by the factions and the fire Service came in to bring the fire under control so we are currently on the ground. In terms of security,  we have adequate logistics and personnel to provide the necessary security and ensure that the law and order in the community is sustained.”

DCOP Afeku said the Police have since the incident held meetings with relevant stakeholders to ensure the incident does not recur.

“We have given the necessary assurance that investigations into the incident is still ongoing and whoever is found culpable will be dealt with appropriately according to  the law,” he said.

He also advised the youth in the area not take “the law into their own hands.”

“There are due processes which are being followed. They must exercise all the necessary circumspection and patience”
