The Chief Executive Officer of the Gratis foundation, Emmanuel Asiedu has called on administrators of polytechnics in the country to streamline their academic programs to enable specialization among students.

His comments come on the back of moves by government to convert all polytechnics into technical universities. The decision also forms part of government’s aim to harmonize the operations of polytechnics to make them competitive in the job market.

Mr. Emmanuel Asiedu was speaking to Citi News at the second edition of the Business Excellence Awards where the Gratis foundation was adjudged the Indigenous Technology Company of the year.

“It is feasible but the problem is that we need them to specialize and the polytechnics’ attention when they are almost trying to run be like traditional universities should also be out. It is not when they you get a professor to teach your students that qualifies you to be a technical university and be successful, it is when your students are able to come out with innovations,” he said.

The ministry of education has indicated that it will commence the full implementation of the program beginning the third quarter of 2016. But Mr. Asiedu believes the necessary infrastructure ought to be put in place before a full implementation of the program.

“I think some of them will be able to start but not all and that’s why I like government saying that not all of them are going to start at the same time…you should show that you possess some basic requirements such as lecturers, equipment, classroom blocks among others,” he added.

The Business Excellence Awards recognizes and celebrates exemplary conduct and outstanding behavior among carefully selected individuals and corporate executives in Ghana and Nigeria.
