Over a thousand people working on the Yendi- Gushegu stretch of the Eastern corridor road in the Northern Region on Wednesday morning demonstrated to demand the payment of their eight months salary arrears from their employers.

The workers want their employers to pay them an increment of 18 percent of their salaries which they say took a retrospective effect from January this year.

But the employers say they will not be able to heed the demands of the workers.

“On 31st August we had a meeting with management regarding salary increment and finally agreed that 18 percent of the increment will reflect in the salaries. The workers were demanding the differences which was supposed to have taken effect from January this year but management is saying it cannot pay the differences,” one of the aggrieved workers told Citi News.

He also indicated that the executives of the workers union will be engaging management in order to arrive at a compromise,

“At the moment, the union is going into a meeting with management to make sure that the issue is resolved, if it happens that they agree to pay the differences, then we will have to sign a memorandum of understanding to that effect so that in the future we will not experience what is happening again,” he said.

Meanwhile work on the Yendi-Bimbilla stretch of the same road has stalled after the contractors accused the workers of pilfering some of the materials for the construction.
