Veteran Ghanaian boxer Michael Ayitey Okine popularly known as Ayitey Powers has lashed out at individuals claiming that his only motivation for staying in the sport is for the financial benefits.

Powers has been busy engaging a number of low profile fighters since his sell out bout against his long time rival now turned friend Briamah Kamoko.

At the beginning of the year Powers recorded a knockout victory in round 5 over Benin’s Anicet Amoussou in a 10 round fight before defeating Kwesi Tutu in June in a Cruiser-weight bout.

Powers who had been slated to fight as an under-card in a bout being put together by Baby Jet Promotions in the United Kingdom last month before it was postponed has voiced his frustrations at being accused consistently of being a money grabber.

“Sometimes you don’t have to listen to what people say, what do they mean when they say I am fighting for money, boxing is my business and boxing is the work that I do.”

“If someone says I am fighting for the money I really don’t understand them because when I fight I have to pick up my purse.”

“When the likes of Pacman fight don’t they get paid?”

“After I fought Bukom Banku I have been involved in two fights and won all but people never notice my victories but are quick to comment when I lose.”

“You can clearly see that I am fighting for the wins and not just the money,” he told Citi Sports in an interview.
