Ghana football legend Charles Kumi Gyamfi has passed away at the age of 86.
He died at the Cocoa clinic this morning after a long illness.
C.K. Gyamfi as he was popularly called was not only a player of the Black Stars in the late 50’s but coached Ghana to win three African nation cup titles namely 1963, 1965 and 1982.
Charles Kumi Gyamfi a retired Ghanaian footballer was remarkable for being the first African player to play in Germany, when he joined Fortuna Düsseldorf in 1960.
After retiring as a player he became a coach, and career highlights include leading Ghana to the African Cup of Nations three times, making him the most successful coach in ACN history.
This record has since been equalled by Egypt’s Hassan Shehata.
In January 2008 he publicly lamented the modern obsession of players with money rather than the love of the game.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) said it is “immensely hurt by the loss of such a talented footballer and coach who shaped the lives and careers of many Ghanaian footballers.”
