The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Presidential Candidate, Nana Akufo Addo is confident the Electoral Commission (EC) will compile a new voters’ register before the 2016 elections.

Nana Akufo-Addo believes a new register will make the results of the 2016 elections credible.

[contextly_sidebar id=”ho4MLwceEUf6dEqQm9lB2r0NuC7nwdha”]The country’s political parties have been divided over the issue of a new voters’ register ahead of election 2016.

The flagbearer of the NPP, Nana Akuffo Addo and his running mate, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia at a press conference held last week gave reasons to back their calls for a new national register which they say is bloated hence lacks credibility.

Their calls came after Dr. Bawumia alleged that about 76,286 Togolese nationals have their names registered in Ghana’s voters’ register.

Speaking at a meeting with the party’s Parliamentary Candidate for Tema West Carlos Ahenkrah, Nana Addo rejected accusations that a new register will be to the advantage of the NPP.

“Since 1992 till today, the NPP has led all the reforms in the electoral system from transparent ballot boxes to biometric registration. The NDC has always rejected electoral reforms. When we pushed for coloured photo IDs, Obed Asamoah who is a member of the NDC took the matter to court.

“That is why I am telling you that the new voters register we are asking for will come and will not inure to the benefit of the NPP but will be an advantage to the country’s democracy,” he stated.

In a related development Mr Kwadwo Gyapong, Volta Regional Chairman of the party has said the Volta Regional branch of the NDC is unperturbed by allegations of aiding Togolese nationals to register and vote in Ghana’s Presidential elections,

He believes that there is nothing illegal with mobilizing members of the Party in Benin, Togo and other neighbouring countries to come and participate in national elections.
