The Executive director of policy think tank, IMANI Ghana, Franklin Cudjoe has commended, President John Mahama for the decision to massively restructure the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

The president’s recent comment has raised concerns about government’s plans for the company he has stated on record that ECG will not be privatized.
But in an interview with Citi News the IMANI Chief maintains that President Mahama’s critics got it all wrong.
“The president did not say ECG will not be privatized, he said that ECG will not be sold out; there is a big difference. By privatization, he means that there will be private sector participation. Of course, the asset belongs to the state. There is a private sector participation for twenty or so years, what it means is that they are looking for newer sources of revenue, newer ways of doing things, collecting revenue, expanding our assets and those funds cannot continuously come from the state, so there is a big difference,” he explained
“So what the president meant, I think is that there would be privatization of private sector participation and that is a very responsible call. It couldn’t have been put better by the president and in deed for some of us who have been watching the space for some time now, this is the boldest comment yet to come from the presidency,” Franklin Cudjoe added.
