A manhunt is underway in the Brong Ahafo Region for members of an angry mob that broke into a police station, dragged a fetish priest who had been incarcerated out and lynched him.

The priest had been arrested after residents in the area accused him of killing one of the members of the community.

He was then lynched with reports indicating his body was also burnt by the unrelenting mob.

The police have since commenced a search for the perpetrators of the act and are confident of apprehending them soon.

DCOP Maxwell Atingani, who confirmed the incident to Citi News in an interview said: “A fetish priest stabbed somebody to death. The Police went in, rushed the body to hospital and picked the fetish priest to the station and locked him up so that he will investigations will be conducted the next day and process him for court.”

“So when the townsfolk heard that, that person had died, they rushed to the Police station, demanding the head of the fetish priest. They vandalized the Police station, entered there used hammers and other implement and broke into the cell dragged this man out and put him to death.”

DCOP Atingani added that one person had been shot and is receiving treatment at the hospital “under police guard.”

“We fired some shots into the air and one person was injured. The injured is now at the hospital receiving treatment under police guard.”

The incident comes days after 4 people were killed and seven others injured following a shooting incident in Tuobodom, another town in the Brong Ahafo Region.

The shooting, which residents believe were the result of a chieftaincy dispute, sparked reprisal attacks in which at least 3 houses were razed to the ground.
