Nii Tetteh Azao I, Regent of Avenor in the Okaikwei South District, on Saturday said he was happy with the demolition of illegal structures in the community by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA).
He said the exercise was necessary because the people living in the illegal structures were being exposed to serious health hazards.
Nii Azao said this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, when the Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive, Dr Alfred Oko Vanderpuije led the AMA taskforce to undertake a cleanup and demolishing exercise in the area, as part of the National Sanitation Exercise.
Nii Azao also expressed concern about the abrupt halt in the construction of a six-classroom and kindergarten block in Avenor.
He appealed to the AMA to put up one of the Millennium Schools at the proposed school site at Avenor to give the place a facelift.
Nii Azao called on the residents to support the AMA in its efforts at ensuring sound sanitary practices to ensure a clean and safe environment.
Dr Vanderpuije warned the people that government would not tolerate indiscipline in the area, as their behaviour has slowed down developmental projects.
He urged them to report anyone they see defecating or dumping refuse into the drains to the authorities.
He told the people of Avenor that government alone cannot address the environmental problem, saying that; “our environment can only be healthy if each of us becomes a little more sensitive, conscious and responsible.”
Some residents at Avenor, in an interview with the GNA said the insanitary condition in the area was a major problem, adding that; “we are happy that today we have been relieved by the exercise.”
