The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akufo Addo has called for the acceleration of moves by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to consolidate its position as a regional market.
According to Nana Addo, a strong regional market will be extremely beneficial to the growth of the local industries in Ghana.
[contextly_sidebar id=”cbFkNIcZc1QepHUFD6GoGVOQZ3l1jL7y”]”ECOWAS is a community of 15 countries which little by little is trying to make itself a regional market. We need to accelerate that process so that we can have a full developed regional market.
“By 2030 the 300 million people in today’s ECOWAS is estimated to rise to 500 million people. That’s a large number of people; a large market. It is becomes a genuine regional market, it will become a big magnet for Ghanaian enterprise and industry.”
Nana Addo acknowledged the recent struggles of the European Union but highlighted the prosperity it has brought the European people which he believes cannot be questioned.
He suggested that a genuine ECOWAS regional market will bring success, akin to what the EU has delivered to its member states, to Ghana and the whole West African sub-region.
“The European Union is undergoing challenges nevertheless I don’t think that anyone can deny that it has brought exceptional prosperity to the European people.
“I am confident that it will overcome these challenges and that just as it has delivered prosperty to the European people I am confident that a functioning ECOWAS as a genuine regional market will deliver that prosperity to the West African and Ghanain people, he added”
