A former second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Professor Mike Ocquaye has criticized political parties in the country especially the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for preaching hatred and divisive politics.

He categorically mentioned former President John Rawlings as the chief architect of such politicking.

“Former President Rawlings went about telling Northerners that we hated them, we killed the chief, we had a tape, we should vote for them so that they come and expose us. They voted for them, where is the tape, where is the evidence that a former President of all people has said existed?” he asked.

According to him, such divisive politics does not augur well for Ghana’s growing democracy.

Prof. Oquaye’s comments were in response to criticisms from some quarters that the NPP is an elitist political party.

Meanwhile, the General Secretary of the NPP, Kwabena Agyei Agyapong says part of the party’s strategy for 2016 will be to connect with people in areas the party has not done well in past elections.

“We would have to devise strategies of connecting with the people and building confidence in them so that they can feel a certain amount of affinity towards our political tradition,” he said
