The Regent of Bimbilla, Nyelineologu Naa Yakubu Andani has dismissed claims linking him to the violence that occurred in Bimbilla last week.
The Police, in a report to the Court indicted the Regent of Bimbilla for inciting the violence when he allegedly banned three butchers from using an abattoir in the town.
[contextly_sidebar id=”aoUOFjYEGsggG0kP5jNtiQH1Nbq8N3mT”]Some butchers allegedly refused to present a portion of their meat to the Regent as demanded by tradition, sparking clashes between the butchers and the guards of the Regent.
The shooting incident has resulted in the death of 13 people while 10 persons are still receiving treatment at the hospital after sustaining gunshot wounds.
Eight individuals have also been arrested including the Palace Registrar.
Responding to the Police report in an interview with Citi News, the spokesperson of the Regent of Bimbilla, Aikaa Tahiru Osman said the decision to close down the abattoir was a unanimous decision taken by the District Security Council and not the Regent of Bimbilla.
“The Police report is indicting the Regent or whoever without indicting the Police Commander in Bimbilla, then that means the report is not fair,” he said.
He argued that “whatever decision that was taken with regards to banning the people and making other suggestions for amicable resolution to bring peace in Bimbilla was the concern of the whole DISEC of which the Police Commander was part of.”
Tahiru Osman disclosed that after taking the decision, the DISEC agreed that a letter will be written to that effect but he claimed that after they dispersed from the meeting, the Police Commander allowed some people to slaughter animals at the abattoir.
“He [Police Commander] rather is supposed to be indicted. I am telling you; quote me everywhere!” he fumed.
Death toll still 13
Meanwhile, the Public Relations Officer of the Northern Regional Police Command, ASP Ebenezer Tetteh has denied media reports suggesting that the death toll his risen to 19.
“The number officially still stands at 13 so wherever the information is coming from, I cannot confirm.”
“I am dealing with the official information from the Police on the ground so the number still stands at 13,” he added.
