Former National Security Coordinator Brigadier General Nunoo Mensah (rtd) has chastised the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) for the recent demolitions, saying, it is not the solution to the perennial flooding in the city.
This, to him is because the main problem, which is the filth engulfing the city, has not been tackled decisively.
[contextly_sidebar id=”07wTyTm1TO9jqKLmvpOhF8yfrC6H0SDU”]Following the floods and a deadly explosion at a GOIL fuel station at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle, City authorities have been demolishing fuel stations and other structures built on waterways.
However,in an interview with Citi News, the Head of Human Security at the National Security Secretariat asked government to refrain from knee jerk actions and devise modern means of dealing with the sanitation problem in the city.
“Pulling down the building is not the solution to the problem.There are many many problems.I have travelled many other countries outside Ghana and in Accra is one of the areas where you see filth more than any other place and for many years I have been a crusader on issues of the environment and so on and I believe that it is now time, we must take hard decisions to deal with some problems that we know exist,” Nunoo Mensah said.
More demolitions
Meanwhile the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has warned of more demolitions of unauthorized structures at Old Fadama, commonly known as Sodom and Gomorrah and other areas.
He gave the warning when he met the leadership of the residents in the area after a tour to assess the progress of the demolition exercise there.
The Mayor said the demolition was to help prevent future flooding and destruction around the Odaw river.
“No more shall we allow a disaster of such nature to visit the city of Accra,” he told the residents.
