The Member of Parliament (MP) for the Tema West, Irene Naa Torshie Addo, has appealed for the construction of a storm drain for flood prone Community 20 and its environs in Tema.

She said the available drains had become a death trap to residents as they overflowed anytime it rained.

[contextly_sidebar id=”BKWI1ZqddMv86w46zcdr7UNdVXrnKvBq”]The MP made the appeal when she visited areas in her Constituency that got flooded during the recent downpour to sympathize with the victims.

The areas she visited included Community 20, Batsonaa, Adjei Kojo, Community Five and Klagoon, where hundreds of residents had been displaced.

This, the MP said, was unacceptable as according to her, the flood water sometimes carried cars and people whenever there was a downpour.

She called for a holistic approach to the solving of the perennial flooding in the flood prone in the Tema Metropolis, adding that measures must be taken devoid of politics.

According to her, the TDC and the TMA must be up and doing to ensure that people did not build on water ways while they collected property bills and property rate, respectively, from them.

She stated that the TMA must take a bold step to remove structures from waterways and prosecute those who threw litter into drains.

Madam Addo also called for attitudinal change among residents as she complained that some residents in Communities 18 and 20 threw rubbish into the drain even though their area was an elite one.

The MP also urged residents to engage in some self-help projects to augment efforts of the authorities in solving the flooding problems in the area as she reiterated that the government alone could not do it.

She appealed for building materials for the construction of some of the needed drains in the area.

This, she said, would compel the authorities to provide the area with the needed technical and professional support as well as labour to solve the problem once and for all.
