Ghana’s Black Meteors have been dumped out of the qualifiers for the 2016 Olympic Games after losing 5-4 on penalties away to Congo Brazzaville.
Ghana was leading by a lone goal from the first leg in Accra last week but the score was levelled by Congo’s Sylvere Ganvoula in the 29th minute and that sent the match into the penalty shootout.
The Black Meteors missed their third kick of the shootout and it turned out to be costly as it sent the Congolese through to the next round of qualifiers where they will meet Nigeria.
There is final round of qualifiers that will precede the African U-23 qualifiers in Senegal.
The three top teams from that tournament will represent the continent at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
Ghana has thus missed the men’s Olympic football tournament for the third straight time since featuring in the 2004 Athens Games.
