Angry residents of Tumu in the Upper West region are demanding the removal of the Tumu District Police Commander, ASP Benjamin Sumani.

The residents who protested to press home their concerns have accused the Commander of disrespecting traditional authorities in the area and failing to devise stringent measures to ensure that criminal activities in the district is controlled.

The residents later presented a petition that captured their concerns to the DCE of the area at the District Assembly.

Speaking to Citi News, the Secretary of the Concerned Youth of Tumu, Razak Veni explained that though the Police Commander has been transferred to another area, he has refused to leave and is still at post.

He further stated that the ASP Sumani had among other things illegally turned a “revenue collection point” in the area to a Police barrier.

“The actions of the District Police Commander, ASP Benjamin Sumani  is known to be on official transfer from this area but he has gone to do his own connections. There is an unapproved Police barrier within the Tumu township, it is originally meant to be a revenue collection point to the District Assembly so we want that to be handed over to the District Assembly while the Police mount their own entry point.

Meanwhile, ASP Benjamin Sumani who is at the centre of the controversy has denied the allegations levelled against him.

He explained that his transfer was based on orders from the Police Administration and he had so far complied with them.

“Recently in Upper West , there were some complaints that armed robbers were terrorising people around so the Police Adminstration restrategise security issues and asked me to go to Lawra and I have complied with orders by my administration and as of now I am in Lawra”

“We have criminal cases, we have civil cases, there are criminal cases, there are traditional cases, we have cheiftancy cases but the problem is that every case whether criminal or not, they want to intervene but some are purely criminal,” he further explained.
