The governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) has appointed the nation’s President,  John Mahama and his Vice, Amissah-Arthur to serve on the party’s Political Committee.

The Political Committee which is part of nine committees inaugurated by the party has been tasked to deal with “cross-cutting” issues in the country’s politics.

[contextly_sidebar id=”jrRt6P5ixpfJKI6MaJbfY2gDCx3LE16s”]John Mahama’s appointment comes after President of the Volta Regional House of Chiefs, Togbe Afede rejected an offer to serve on the party’s Economic Committee.

The party subsequently issued an apology with the explanation that his inclusion was as a result of an error in communication.

“I think it has to do with the person who was sent to do the consultation but we apologize to Togbe Afede,” the NDC’s General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketia told Citi News.

The Political Committee has members including the General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, former chairman, Kwabena Adjei, current chairman, Kofi Portuphy and Majority Leader, Alban Bagbin among others.

Other committees inaugurated on Wednesday included the Disciplinary Committee which has Commodore Steve Obimpeh and Naval Captain Asaase Gyimah as members.

Members of the Complaints Committee and the Legal Committee were also inaugurated at Tuesday’s meeting.

Asiedu Nketia addressed the newly sworn in Committee members on the need to be punctual at meetings and warned that they will be expelled from the committees if they fail to attend meetings three consecutive times.

He once again  apologized to Togbe Afede for his earlier inclusion on the Economic Committee.

President Mahama who administered the oath of office to the new committee members charged them to work diligently to champion the course of the party.

He indicated that “the work of committees can be boring but they are the work that makes a difference between a successful party and an unsuccessful party.”

According to him, although it might be more glamorous to be a member of the National Executive Committee (NEC), “the actual work in terms of the day to day strategies, policy formulations are done by the sub-committees of the party.”

“We have a lot of talents in this party. Not everybody can stand for political office…so these are very important positions and I believe that you will give it your best,” he remarked.
