The immediate past General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, popularly known as ‘Sir John’ has dismissed reports of a rift between the party’s flagbearer, its Chairman and General Secretary.

“Nana Akufo-Addo gets on very well with Afoko and Kwabena Agyepong…Kwabena Agyepong was his campaign manager when Akufo-Addo contested JA Kufuor at Sunyani so Nana Akufo-Addo has always had a soft spot for our General Secretary,” he said.

[contextly_sidebar id=”MEzOa89CQ0h390eDTQbStwk0uW6e0W2z”]A steering committee meeting in the absence of the party’s Chairman, Paul Afoko and General Secretary, Kwabena Agyepong fueled the perception that there are cracks within the leadership of the NPP.

The convener of the meeting, the first vice chairman, Freddie Blay was accused of usurping the powers of Paul Afoko; an accusation he denied.

Kwabena Agyepong in a revealing media interview accused some members of scheming to undermine the party leadership by creating divisions.

An aggrieved Agyepong said: “Some people are bent on causing a rift between the two of usbecause they don’t want us together so anytime they see that Nana Addo and I are getting close, then they start spreading lies about me.”

Sir John told Citi News, the happenings within the party are being exaggerated to suit the parochial the interest of a few people.

He insisted their party’s flagbearer bears no grudge against the two gentlemen and that on the contrary, they are on good terms with each other.

“It is never true to say that Nana Akufo-Addo and these gentlemen are poles apart,” he maintained.

He said such rumours are nothing new when it comes to party politics; adding that “if you go into the NDC, they have the same challenges there – John Mahama’s group as opposed to Mills’ group.”

“For me, what we are witnessing in the NPP is not anything that we should be worried at all,” he stressed.
