President John Dramani Mahama is in Lome, Togo, to hold discussions with political stakeholders after Saturday’s presidential elections.
President Mahama, who is the Chair of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, is on the post- election visit with the President of Cote D’Ivoire, Alhassane Ouattara.
The two Presidents arrived in Lome on Tuesday. Togo went to the polls on Saturday to elect a President.
During an earlier visit to Togo, President Mahama urged candidates, who include incumbent President Faure Gnassingbe and his main competitor Jean-Pierre Fabre, to respect the results that would be announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
The Independent National Electoral Commission said only 53 to 55 percent of the country’s 3.5 million eligible voters, participated in Saturday’s polls.
The election commission has 6 days, from the end of voting, to announce the results.
The incumbent President, Faure Gnassingbe is seeking a third 5-year term, which would extend his family’s reign for nearly 50 years.
Faure Gnassingbe assumed office in 2005 after the death of his father, Gnassingbe Eyadema, who governed the country for 38 years.
