Police in Accra on Sunday gunned down a man believed to be a notorious car snatcher who operates within the Accra Metropolis.
The suspect was shot and killed after he and others engaged the police in a gun battle.
According to the police they received information that the group of robbers snatched a taxicab at a gun point at Nungua and therefore dispatched a team of police officers to the area.
Upon seeing the police the group opened fire which the Police returned.
It resulted in the death of one while the others escaped with gunshot wounds.
According to the police, the robbers were operating in around Spintex, Adenta, Nungua, East Legon and its environs.
The Greater Accra Regional Police Commander, DCOP Tetteh Yohuno told Citi News that, “ on the 24th April, the Accra regional Police Command received information that a group of robbers were operating in around Spintex, Adenta, Nungua, East Legon and its environs and had snatched a taxi cab at gun point in the process at Nungua. The command immediately dispatched a team of policemen to the aforementioned areas to save the situation.”
He added that “At about 1am the team spotted, the team spotted a Toyota Yaris Taxi cab, with registration number GW 9533 13 which they had snatched from the owner around Spintex road. The suspected robbers upon seeing the Police, opened fire on the police, prompting the police to return fire in defense and in the process, leading to the death of the suspects, the name still unknown.”
As part of investigations the Toyota Yaris which was snatched has been impounded by the Police.
The deceased has also been identified by the complainant as one of the robbers who attacked him at a gun point on the day.
Appeal for information
The Regional Police Command is appealing to health facilities to report any person who visit their facilities with gun wounds to the nearest Police station.
