President John Dramani Mahama has given the strongest assurance yet that his government will do all it can to prevent the National Health Insurance Scheme from collapsing in spite of the challenges.
[contextly_sidebar id=”MyFc8INw2CqTvtxPEU41RUT37FBZYAKa”]Speaking at a meeting with the leadership of the EP Church of Ghana, President Mahama says government will do all it can to save the scheme.
“We have been having some difficulties with the National Health Insurance and we are working to see how we can restructure that so that we smoothen it and make it able to provide the access to health and the quality of healthcare that we currently are enjoying.”
Government has been accused to supervising an NHIS which is near collapse following the delay in the payment of claims to service providers.
Some health facilities have over the years threatened to turn away NHIs card holders who throng their facilities to access healthcare.
Several stakeholders of the NHIS have urged government to review the scheme and make it more attractive and to cover other ailments that hither to were not covered.
According to president Mahama, because “Government is a guarantor of the health insurance scheme, there is no way government is going to sit and see that scheme collapse.”
“We are looking at the actuarial studies that has been done, a few years ago there was a major review of the scheme and it was said that government should find new sources of revenue to be able to sustain the scheme,” he noted.
