The South African High Commission in Ghana has revealed it has received threats of attacks from some people following xenophobic attacks in South Africa.
[contextly_sidebar id=”GNWz9YKQKhUqWDcxdwgKVrTgasy0yLq9″]There has been heavy security presence at the South African High Commission over the weekend in Labone in Accra to protect the facility for fear of reprisal attacks, according to sources close to the High Commission.
South African High Commissioner to Ghana Lulama Xingwana who addressed a press conference in Accra today said “We have received threats in the High Commission.”
She narrated one of such incidence saying 4 men besieged the High Commission on Friday requesting to see the High Commissioner.
“They wanted to go into the office but were stopped by the security at the gate” said Ms. Lulama Xingwana. After they were refused entry at the gate the four men “threatened that they will be coming back to burn the High Commission offices” Lulama Xingwana added.
According to the High Commissioner “we have reported the matter to the police and we have received support from the police to make sure that the premises are safe”.
She argued that the people in the High Commission were not all South Africans, rather there were Ghanaians as well. “And therefore we have an interest; whoever is there whether Ghanaian or South African must be protected at all times”.
