A planned familiarization tour by the vice presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to the Volta region was truncated after a group of persons protested against his activities in the region.

Dr Bawumia was on his way to addresse students of the Ho Polytchnic but the protests forced him to cancel the appointment.

[contextly_sidebar id=”7Vejl9CcXiHEayqR7rK517DDCzirLH9J”]The protest according to some residents was a supposed retaliation to a recent incident that occurred in the Ashanti region where two Deputy Ministers of state were heckled by teacher trainees in Kumasi.

The NPP Regional Secretary Joseph Homenya who confirmed the incident to Citi News accused the ruling NDC of masterminding the protest.

“We picked intelligence that our opponent the NDC has mobilized people to attack Dr Bawumia. For whatever reason; all that we heard was for the purpose of equalization for what happened at Wesley College of education. So we asked ourselves what bearing does it have on the NPP?’’ he asked.

He added “true to their words when we got to Akatsi all of a sudden we saw some people drumming and singing carrying placards with inscriptions on it; ‘Bawumia we don’t need you here’,  ‘Bawumia go back to your place.’’

He added that although the vice presidential candidate was to address students of Akatsi college of education, and tertiary students in Ho, the situation prevented him from joining the rest of the team at the function.

The protests which were intended to disrupt every gathering by the New Patriotic Party were staged concurrently at vantage areas.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia was compelled to return to Accra leaving behind the Regional Executives who addressed the crowd.

The regional secretary however condemned the act and said it was an against Ghana’s democratic principles.
