President John Mahama has announced government is set to create a national employment resource center where employment and skills data base will be collated from which employers can recruit young people.

According to the President, the center will also give incentives to employers who pick workers from that data base to encourage patronage.

President made these remarks when he delivered the key note address at the First National Job Summit in Accra.

The event was also used to launch a National Employment Policy.

“Under this restructuring and reform, we intend to create a new national employment resource centre. This new centre will enable the creation of a national employment and a skills database from which employers can freely recruit,” President Mahama declared.

He indicated that “our intention is to create a database that will have all young people who  have registered and are looking for jobs, their qualifications and the kind of job they want. And employers who employ from that database will be given an incentive for employing from that database.”

The issue of unemployment levels in the country continues to rise.

According to the Ghana Employers’ Associations, over 13,000 workers lost their jobs in the last four months.

The association says the situation can be solely blamed on the ongoing power crisis and the resultant increase in the cost of production.
