President John Mahama has said said government is committed to revamping the Volta Aluminum company limited (VALCO) and make it more efficient and effective.

The power-dependent company, which is currently operating only one out of its five pot-lines has been hard hit by the power crisis facing the country.

If all five pot-lines of the company were operating, it could produce 2,000 metric tonnes of alumina per day.

Speaking to workers of the company when he paid a working visit to the factory, President Mahama directed that when the current power crises is over, all other surplus power should  be given to VALCO.

“I want to give you a commitment not only for the revival of VALCO but to also to backward integrate VALCO into the extractive industry of our country,” said president Mahama.

He added that government is fully supportive of reviving not only VALCO but reviving the other key industries that “our first president Dr Kwame Nkrumah left us.”

“As soon as this power situation stabilizes, I’ve asked that priority should be given to VALCO in terms of extra energy that we have, so that you can expand and bring more port lines into operation.”
