Two of the four Ghanaian citizens who were rescued in Yemen arrived in Ghana on Tuesday.
[contextly_sidebar id=”MFjXLRGDUCu4heAqLcPxvTuIbXfvNvnb”]The two who are students of the University of Science and Technology in Yemen were rescued in Yemen which is undergoing violent ethnic clashes by the Ghana Embassy in Saudi Arabia.
The Ghanaian Embassy in partnership with Immigration officers in Saudi Arabia rescued them after being caught up in the violence in Yemen.
Speaking to Citi News after their arrival at the Kotoka International Airport one of the two returnees Ahmed Mustapha Yaajalal said they had a challenge as to how to leave Yemen when the civil war began.
“The university had put on hold all academic activities; they closed down the school” Ahmed Mustapha Yaajalal said.
According to Ahmed Mustapha Yaajalal they are only two Ghanaian students in the University.
Houthi rebels and loyals of the ousted Yemen President, Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi have been engaged in fierce fighting over the control of the country.
Many lives have been lost, properties have been destroyed and thousands are fleeing the country.
The two returnees Ahmed Mustapha Yaajalal and Abdul Maane Sualah praised the Ambassador for what they said was “the prompt response to their plight.”
Ahmed Mustapha Yaajalal said “Alhaji Sinare did a great job.”
He explained that they had to travel by road to the Saudi border. Though they passed through a number of barriers “immediately we said we were Ghanaians, they security at the border will ask us to go since our Ambassador had sorted everything out.”
Meanwhile the two who are students have been transferred to a sister university in Malaysia to write their end of semester exams.
Russia, India and Indonesia are among other countries to have already carried out evacuations amid increasing international concern.
Over the past two weeks, fighting in Yemen has left more than 500 people dead and some 1,700 wounded, UN humanitarian chief Valerie Amos has said.
