Members of the Tema District Council of Labour (TDCL) are angry with the Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC) for approving an increment in utility tariffs.

[contextly_sidebar id=”1Exgqqp48QM9bAoCyJF5B5QBSfHtpJUM”]Last week, the PURC announced an increase in electricity and water prices by 2.63% and 1.06% respectively.

The Commission after widespread public outrage explained that increasing the tariffs was to enable the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) effectively manage the ongoing load shedding exercise.

But the TDCL says it is “surprised about the ill-timing of the utility tariff increases as PURC is perfectly aware that electricity is virtually non-existent and most at times erratic, thus bringing a lot of economic discomfort and hardship on workers, industries, the community and our families.”

TDCL in a statement claimed that the “PURC is being insensitive to the woes of Ghanaians…by slapping this ill-timed utility increases on us.”

The Union argued that “consumers and industries are spending extra income on the acquisition of generator sets, plants and other alternative sources of electricity power.”

The TDCL is however urging the PURC to immediately reverse the utility tariffs unconditionally.

“We cannot afford to take any pesewa increase in utility tariffs in the midst of hardship workers are going through as a result of the electricity power outages.”
