MMDA’s in the Volta Region have been charged to redirect their focus on social protection and improving the standard of living for People Living with Disability (PWD) in the Assemblies.

[contextly_sidebar id=”6LyGuizsN6Ss8v76fucuJcXYmmyUMn2R”]The Director Of Voice Ghana, Mr Francis Asong said recent reports from the Public Account Commission(PAC) revealed massive misappropriation of the percentage of the District Assembly Common Fund(DACF) for Persons Living with Disabilities.

A situation he said violates the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) which Ghana is a member state.

He however underscored the need to include issues of social protection into the Medium Term Development Plan and budget of the Assembly.

‘’Persons with disabilities should not be viewed as “objects” of charity, medical treatment and social protection; rather as “subjects” with rights, who are capable of claiming those rights and making decisions for their lives based on their free and informed consent as well as being active members of society’’ he said.

He made the call during a training for Planning Officers from some selected Assemblies in the Volta region. The workshop sought to school MMDA’s planning officers on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD).

The objectives of the convention is to promote, protect and ensure the full and equal enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms by all persons with disabilities, and to promote respect for their inherent dignity.
With supports from Disability Rights Fund, the Ho-based disability interest NGO; Voice Ghana is confident to improve lives of People Living with Disability in the region through advocacy and stakeholder engagements.
