An association of tertiary students from Ketu North District in the Volta Region is calling on teachers in to show more commitment to their jobs by improving their relationships with their pupils.
[contextly_sidebar id=”YFaD0wffHbC3AsEy0XleVYw98ZWTAunD”]The Ho Polytechnic Chapter of the Association; Ketu North Students Union (KENSU) observed a less cordial relationship between teachers and pupils in the Ketu North District.
A situation the group said is worrying since most pupils have difficulties approaching their teachers with issues.
According to the group, pupils’ ability to learn depends not just on the quality of their textbooks and teachers, but also on the strength of their relationships with their teachers.
The president of the group Master Emmanuel Kpogo, said the most powerful force in education is the special connection between teachers and pupils.
He explained that pupils spend majority of their time in school therefore it behooves on teachers to see to the social, emotional and academic growth of the children.
Master Emmanuel Kpogo insisted that ‘’triggering the student’s desire to learn, and guiding it in the right direction by closer interactions would make teachers know pupils, appeal to their interests, and guide them in achieving their goals in life.’’
The group made this call after an educational outreach in the district; supported by the Member of Parliament for the area, James Klutse Avedzi and the District Assembly.
The project since its inception three years ago sought to engage stakeholders in discussing challenges facing education in the district and the way forward.
As part of this year’s outreach, the tertiary students under supervision of the district education directorate spent better part of their holidays teaching and mentoring pupils of basic schools in the district.
