The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has proposed that the Presidential elections in Togo be postponed by 10 days.

[contextly_sidebar id=”k9JZ87rFZ9cg1KFGpW1smrCpejMHhdDK”]This is to allow the Independent National Electoral Commission in Togo to fully complete work on the voters register.

ECOWAS Chair, President John Dramani Mahama announced this at the end of a two day pre-election visit to Nigeria and Togo.

The pre-election visits were to enable him discuss reports of the sub-region’s monitoring groups with the various stakeholders.

“My view of work that has to be done on validating the voters register, it makes it very difficult for the election to come off on the 15th of April. So ECOWAS proposes that the election be shifted by 10 days to the 25 of April so that enough space is given for issues relating to the voters register be resolved to everybody’s satisfaction in advance in the election.”

He added that “other issues were raised in respect of security and we discussed those with Mr President to ensure that safety and security are maintained in the run-up to the election.”

President Mahama was accompanied by Dr. Toga Gayewea Mcintosh, Vice President of the ECOWAS Commission.
